FireSmart & Wildfire Risk Reduction in the Kootenays

Keeping Kootenay Homes Safe, Resilient & Prepared

The Kootenays are beautiful—and also wildfire‑prone. That’s why, in partnership with the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s FireSmart program, we’re dedicated to helping homeowners reduce wildfire risk, protect their properties, and bolster community resilience.

Protect Your Home: FireSmart Wildfire Safety in the Kootenay

Why It Matters

Homes on the wildland‑urban interface (where forested land meets residential development) are vulnerable. The RDCK notes that homes that adopt FireSmart practices are far more likely to survive wildfire events.

For example:

  • Free property assessments are available via the RDCK to help you identify hazards.

  • The RDCK’s and RDKB FireSmart programs run a suite of supports—from rebates to neighbourhood recognition programs—to incentivize action.

What You Can Do

As a homeowner in Castlegar, Nelson, Trail, and the surrounding areas, you can take several proactive steps:

  1. Book a Free Home Assessment
Use the RDCK FireSmart Home Partners program to get a professional review of your property and receive a tailored mitigation plan.
  2. Apply for a Rebate (when available)
When funding is open, the RDCK offers rebates for eligible FireSmart work—ask for a work plan before you begin any major mitigation.

  3. Adopt FireSmart Practices Around Your Home

    • Clear fuels and vegetation near your home (especially within 10 m) to reduce ember risk.

    • Ensure roofs, decks, vents, and gaps are free from fine combustible material and mesh protected

    • Maintain defensible space around structures, and scale your efforts to your site’s slope, fuel type, and exposure.

    • Stay informed and registered for local emergency alerts.

    • Join or Create a FireSmart Neighbourhood
The more homes in a community that adopt FireSmart, the more resilient the area becomes—this kind of collective action lowers risk for everyone.

  • Maintain 10 m of defensible space around your home (or the zone recommended by your assessment).
  • Verify your insurance covers wildfire risk and ask about discounts if you’ve adopted FireSmart measures.
